Dreaming In Color: Black Gay Men Redefining Family

  • GoodWerk Counseling 801 Douglas Avenue Altamonte Springs, Florida, 32714 United States (map)

Family is often imagined through narrow definitions shaped by tradition, culture, and societal expectations. For Black gay men, the journey to parenthood can involve navigating unique questions around identity, visibility, belonging, and access while also holding onto dreams of creating loving, affirming families of their own. Alongside moments of joy and hope, this path can include emotional, financial, and logistical challenges that are rarely centered in broader conversations about family building.

Dreaming In Color: Black Gay Men Redefining Family is a 90 minute virtual workshop designed to create space for honest dialogue, storytelling, and community connection. Through the lived experiences of Black gay fathers and aspiring parents, this conversation highlights the many ways family can be imagined, created, and nurtured outside of traditional expectations. Rooted in resilience, authenticity, and collective care, the workshop offers a meaningful opportunity to explore both the beauty and complexity of queer parenthood.

Together, panelists will reflect on the realities of becoming and being queer parents, including navigating adoption, surrogacy, co-parenting, chosen family, and the emotional landscape of the journey. Participants will gain insight into the barriers and possibilities that exist along the path to parenthood while engaging in conversations that honor the intersections of race, sexuality, masculinity, and community support.

Through storytelling, reflection, and shared wisdom, attendees will be invited to expand their understanding of what family can look like, challenge limiting narratives, and leave with a deeper sense of hope, affirmation, and possibility for themselves and the communities they care for.
