The way children experience school is shaped by far more than what happens inside the classroom. While teachers play an important role in a child’s education, students are also supported by a network of professionals who help address their academic, emotional, social, and developmental needs. School counselors, social workers, psychologists, Exceptional Student Education (ESE) staff, speech and language pathologists, and family engagement specialists each play an important role in creating a supportive environment where children can thrive.
Beyond the Classroom: Understanding the Village Supporting Your Child is a 90 minute virtual workshop designed to help parents and caregivers better understand the network of professionals supporting their children throughout their educational journey. Through psychoeducation, guided discussion, reflection, and resource sharing, participants will explore the different roles within public schools and learn how to build stronger partnerships with the people working to support their child’s success.
Together, participants will examine the various support systems available within schools and gain a clearer understanding of when and how to seek additional support. Participants will learn practical strategies for communicating with school staff, asking informed questions, requesting support, and advocating for their children with greater confidence.
Rather than feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar school systems or unsure of where to turn, this space encourages curiosity, collaboration, and empowerment. Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences navigating education while engaging in an open and judgment free conversation about the challenges and opportunities that can come with advocating for a child.
Through conversation, reflection, and practical tools, attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of the “village” supporting their children and greater confidence in navigating school resources and partnerships. Whether seeking academic, emotional, developmental, or additional educational support, participants will gain strategies to strengthen communication with schools and help create meaningful pathways for their children to thrive both inside and beyond the classroom.
